Ethnic minorities

Your reference

Our reference 387/757/90

Date

9 February 1993

At the recent meetings with Hong Kong legislative councillors, Mr Wardle repeated your line that we did not have information on the number of applications from ethnic minorities who had succeeded under the British Nationality Scheme because applicants were not required to disclose their ethnic origin in their applications. Emily Lau indicated that the information given her by the ethnic minorities was that 400 families had applied and 220 had succeeded.

Mr Wardle suggested to us afterwards that he would find it helpful to have from official sources some broad measure of the extent to which the ethnic minorities had applied and been successful. He asked if we could get a rough idea by simply looking at the names in your records, which for ethnic minorities should be quite distinctive.

I should be grateful for any assistance which you, HONT or HKID are able to provide with this.
