Ms Lau asked why the 23 wives and widows of ex-servicemen in Hong Kong could not be granted British citizenship. Mr Rawsthorne explained that there was no provision in the legislation to do this but re-iterated that an assurance had been given that they were eligible to come to the United Kingdom for settlement at any time.
