Secretary of State's Easter Travel :

: Possible Visit to Brazil and the Falkland Islands

The Secretary of State had been planning a visit to the Far East during the Easter recess. However, his preferred dates, 4-9 April, are not convenient for either Thailand or Hong Kong. We also looked at the possibility of travelling during the week before Easter, 27 March - X 1 April, but this is now ruled out because Parliament will

Inot rise until 31 March. The Secretary of State has

therefore asked us to look at other alternatives.

One option would be to bring forward the visit pencilled in for the summer to Brazil and the Falkland Islands. I should be grateful if you and SAAD would consider whether such a visit in the week after Easter would be worthwhile. You may also consult HMA Brasilia, and the Governor of the Falkland Islands, on a personal basis, but they should not yet consult any more widely.

Possible outline itineraries might run as follows:

Overnight flight to Brazil

One day in each of Brasilia,

Sao Paulo and Rio (Post will wish to advise on the order in which to take these cities). It might work well in terms of flights to take the BA flight to Sao Paulo; do a business-orientated day there on Tuesday 5 April; and go on to Brasilia on Wednesday 6 April. would also allow the Secretary of State to get a feel for Brazil before meeting the President and other Ministers.
