elections to LegCo were in 1991. (By this time, after the 1989 events in Tiananmen Square, many people in Hong Kong wanted more democracy.) The present Legislative Council now has 18 members

elected directly from 9 two-member constituencies; 21 elected

indirectly from functional constituencies; 18 members appointed

by the Governor and 3 ex-officio officials. For the first time

LegCo has a majority of elected members: 39 out of 60.
