PROPOSED VISIT TO CHINA, KOREA, HONG KONG AND SINGAPORE BY CZECH FOREIGN MINISTER, 17-30 JUNE

1. The Czech Embassy contacted us today to tell us about Mr Zieleniec's plans and to ask if we saw any objection to his visiting Hong Kong 27/29 June, following on from his visit to China and Seoul. If he were to visit Hong Kong, Mr Zieleniec would very much welcome a call on the Governor and a general briefing on political and economic matters from someone in the Secretariat. The Embassy could not say at this stage if there was a more precise focus to the requested briefing.

2. We briefed the Czech Embassy here at their request on the Governor's proposals and will give them an update before the visit.

Despite Chinese sensitivities about internationalisation, we see advantage in ensuring that the Czechs know what line we would like them to take privately with the Chinese, if they are disposed to be helpful.

3. Grateful to know what arrangements would be possible in Hong Kong on Monday, 28 June.
