A £550m contract for the Lantau Fixed Crossing suspension bridge was awarded to the Anglo-Japanese Consortium of Trafalgar House, Costain and Mitsui. UK content is c£250m.

Cathay Pacific have placed a £300m order for Rolls Royce engines for their new fleet of Boeing 777s.

A consortium comprised of Mott Connell, Norman Foster and BAA have been awarded a £40m contract to design the airport passenger terminal at Chek Lap Kok.

The Provisional Airport Authority awarded its first major contract to develop the Airport platform at Chek Lap Kok to a multinational consortium including Costains whose share of the contract will amount to £70m.

A GEC-Alsthom led consortium has been awarded an £800m contract for the 3 x 660 MW Shajiao C coal fired power station in Guangdong Province, South China. This station will be owned and operated for 20 years by a joint venture company set up between Guangdong General Power Company and Hopewell Energy of Hong Kong.

GEC Alsthom/GE (USA) have won the contract to supply the power generation plant for China Light & Power's Black point Power station. The total contract price is in excess of £1 billion with some 40% to be sourced from the UK.

4. Overall the balance of visible trade is in Hong Kong's favour. In 1992 UK imports from Hong Kong were £2,397m, an increase of 11.6% over 1991. Our principal imports from Hong Kong are clothing, miscellaneous manufactured articles and electrical machinery.

5 Major opportunities for UK Companies in the market will be in the projects sector (eg the new port and airport development), as well as in pollution control where expenditure of over HK$20 bn has been earmarked by the Hong Kong Government over the next decade.

UK'S PRESENCE IN HONG KONG'S INVISIBLE SECTOR

6 UK companies (banks, accountants, insurance brokers, consultants etc) have a large presence in Hong Kong's invisibles sector. Though very difficult to quantify it is very probable that the total annual invisible earnings by UK companies in Hong Kong exceed £1,500m.
