On 30 November 1993 the High Commissioner gave a private lunch for two of Paul Keating's key officials, Dr Allan Hawke, his Principal Adviser, and Allan Gyngell, Senior Adviser (International). Hawke said that (contrary to Australian media speculation) the Seattle summit had certainly not fallen short of Australian objectives. An important achievement was that APEC leaders had established a sense of community. was this that Paul Keating was aiming for, not a change to a formal "Community" comparable with the EC, as reported in the press. The decision to hold another meeting of APEC leaders next year was also very important.
