MR GOODLAD'S VISIT TO AUSTRALIA: 31 JULY
7 AUGUST 1993
HONG KONG
Points to make
Grateful for Australia's support for democratic reforms in
Hong Kong and for the opportunity to brief Mr Keating before
his visit to China.
- Our talks with China on Hong Kong electoral issues are
making some progress, but are going slower than we would
like. We are working hard to make a success of them.
The visit by the Secretary of State to Peking on 9 July was
useful in focussing Chinese attention on the essential issues and on the need to make more rapid progress. Time is not unlimited. Practical arragnements will need to be in place
in good time for the local elections in 1994 and the LegCo
elections in 1995.
