RECORD OF CALL ON MR GOODLAD BY SENATOR COOK, AUSTRALIAN MINISTER FOR TRADE: 24 MAY 1993
Present:
Senator The Hon Peter Cook
HE Mr R J Smith, Australian High Commissioner
Ms Meg McDonald, Adviser
Mr G Thomson, Principal Adviser, Department of Foreign
Affairs and Trade
Mr I Forsyth, Assistant Secretary, West European Branch + one staff member from Australian High Commission
The Rt Hon Alastair Goodlad
Mr Guest, Head SPD
Mr Adams, APS/Mr Goodlad
1. Mr Goodlad welcomed Senator Cook. He thought prospects for trade with Australia were good and hoped the UK/Australia trade conference in Melbourne next January would go well. Senator Cook hoped so too, as he was Co-Chairman: he would try to ensure the talks were properly directed.
2. Senator Cook had been charged with inviting Mr Goodlad to Australia as a Guest of Government. The Minister said he very much hoped to make a visit before long. Like most Britons, he had relatives in Australia. Wearing his regional representative's hat, Senator Cook thought it important that, when the Minister visited, he should enter or leave Australia via Perth.
