I have just been in Iceland for a couple of days meeting with Landsvirkjun, the National Power Company, to reciprocate a visit here by Dr Nordal, their Chairman, and to build on links which are already being established between Scottish Hydro-Electric and Landsvirkjun. What these amount to is a study - still at a very early stage of whether it would make sense for Scottish Hydro-Electric to be involved in the Icelandic project to export power by a massive, and lengthy, undersea cable. One possibility is that the cable should terminate in Scotland, perhaps at Peterhead where we have a power station, rather than go direct to continental Europe which is the subject of a separate study involving the Dutch.
Landsvirkjun have told us they are in discussion with the Dutch. Also that there is a group, including Reykjavik City Council, looking at the possibility of constructing part of the cable in Reykjavik. This would, as I understand it, conflict with the interest shown by Pirelli UK, under the chairmanship of Lord Limerick, in providing the cable.
That by way of background.
My immediate purpose in
writing is to seek your help in obtaining a piece of background information. When the Foreign Minister, wearing his hat as Acting Minister of Trade, hosted a dinner for me last night, he mentioned a report presented to Parliament in, I think, May this year giving details of the cable project and the discussions which have taken place so far.
It would be very helpful to us to have a copy of that report and, if it is not too long, have it translated. would of course pay the costs of translation.
We
Could you manage to get a copy of the report for us? having it translated is difficult, I'm sure we can make the necessary arrangements here.
