Briefings for visiting British MPS

Thank you for your letter of 22 February. Normally we would only include a briefing on MFN when the subject was of interest to a particular MP or group of MPs. However, all those who come to Hong Kong under Hong Kong Government sponsorship call on the Secretary for Trade & Industry, who naturally touches on MFN. Only about half of the MPS who visit Hong Kong come under one of our sponsorship programmes.

If we were to try and catch all of them for this purpose, we would need your assistance in informing us when MPs were visiting. On the other hand, if they are coming for genuinely private reasons it would surely be overdoing it to give them compulsory briefings on the MFN issue.
