Visit of the Emperor
Mr. Miyazawa said that the Emperor and Empress were hoping to visit the UK in 1994 on the second leg of their European tour. The Prime Minister said that such a visit would be very welcome indeed. He wondered whether it would be possible to announce the visit during his visit in September. The Ambassador explained that there had already been an initial discussion of possible dates but these matters could not be rushed.
Hong Kong
The Prime Minister thanked Mr. Miyazawa for Japan's support over Hong Kong. Japan's intervention had been very helpful. There appeared to have been some progress in our talks with China although there was still some way to go. The Foreign Secretary would be going to Peking immediately after the Summit.
I am sending copies of this letter to Sir John Boyd in Tokyo, Peter Smith (Department of Trade and industry), Jeremy Heywood (HM Treasury) and Melanie Leech (Cabinet Office).
