BILATERAL RELATIONS
UK/Japan Conference

Mr Hosokawa said that the UK/Japan 2000 Group, of which he and Mr Needham were members, had played an important role in the development of the relationship. He recalled attending the meeting at Brocket Hall in March 1992. The Group's tenth anniversary would be marked by a UK/Japan Conference in London in January. Foreign Minister Hata and the Foreign Secretary would both be able He hoped to give keynote speeches at this Conference and that it would also be possible for them to hold bilateral consultations. Educational exchanges

Mr Hosokawa said he very much hoped it would be possible to exchange young diplomats for training purposes. British students were studying in Japan, compared to some 12,000
Only 120 or so Japanese students in the UK. It was very important to promote greater educational exchange.
The Prime Minister said that we were also keen to promote such exchanges. We had decided to set up a new and prestigious scholarship scheme for up to ten Japanese post-graduates to study
