PRIME MINISTER'S VISIT TO JAPAN: STOPOVER

A 1. As requested in your minute of 6 May, I attach a draft

letter from you to PS/No 10, making recommendations for stopovers on the way to and from Japan for the Prime Minister's visit in September. Eastern Dept, Hong Kong Dept, SEAD, MED and NENAD

agree.

2. If all the recommendations were accepted the programme would be pretty punishing. However, the recommendation concerning Israel is included really to remind the Prime Minister of his commitment and at least offer him the chance of fulfilling it on this occasion. A separate trip would be more satisfactory.
