The Singaporeans are briefed but they do not really want to know. A number have conceded privately that Lee Kuan Yew went too far (interference, action unbecoming of a guest). Regrettably, what we cannot do, as I have previously indicated, is alter the reality that
Singaporeans take their lead from Lee Kuan Yew on issues such as this. Even if most of them do not subscribe fully to LKY's conspiracy theory (of which, I am pleased to note, we have heard nothing for some time), they do have reservations about the wisdom of our policy. We shall, of course, continue to strive to get our message home quietly to the right people.
