8. The Embassy was in good heart, and Mr Wright gives an outstandingly decisive and enthusiastic lead. We shall need to keep an eye on staffing in the years ahead, to ensure that the Ambassador has support of the strength and quality needed to respond to Korea's growing commercial and political importance.

I discussed with Mr Wright the pattern of visits in the coming year. He welcomes the planned visits of the Secretary of State and of trade ministers. It will be important to have attendance of the right profile at the Taejon Expo. If the PUS is able to visit Seoul in September this will be a welcome bonus. If all those plans come off, Mr Wright considers that the optimum time for Mr Goodlad's next visit would probably be Spring 1994.
