Draft Speaking Note for meeting with John Major.
(The Conference)
The Japanese are planning to field a strong side for
our meeting in three weeks time at Awashima, an island near
Tokyo. In the industrial field, Sir' Chino-san, Sir Morita-
san, Sekimoto- san of NEC and Toyoda-san of Toyota have all been
invited as has been former Prime Minister Kaifu, and Hasogawa-
one of the Japanese younger politicians, who was Governor of
a Prefecture, and is now in the Diet having formed his own
political party.

trilateral UK-US-Japan relationship, taken in both a
politico/economic context and a politico/security context.

steps might be taken to alleviate it. GATT and the role of the
G7 are likely to loom large. The security' side discussion will
almost inevitably centre on the UN its role and structure and
lessons to be learned from Yugoslavia, Somalia and Cambodia.
Rehind each of these issues lies the questions of what we should
now expect from the new Clinton administration; and where the EC
is now heading.
