a GATT deal would be an enormous prize. I hope that Japan will do what it can to contribute to early progress in these negotiations.
I am looking forward to the Tokyo Summit. There is a lot to talk about: the need for a coordinated response to the world's economic problems; sustaining international trade; Russia; developmental issues; and others. I am sure that we can handle all this in our usual spirit of cooperation and also by reintroducing some of the informality which used to mark the Economic
Summits.
As you know, I also hope to visit Japan again in the Autumn, if we can
arrange suitable dates. Meanwhile I am delighted that Douglas Hurd will be
visiting Tokyo in April.
