Mr. Mose

I had a good meeting with the British members of the Group to discuss

the conference agenda. The British team this year is particularly strong, and includes the Governor of Hong Kong. I am delighted to see that representation. B-S

on the Japanese side is just as impressive. This well reflects the strength of

UK/Japan relations to which the Group has contributed so much. I am firmly

behind the initiatives they are pursuing to improve the relationship further.

I wish their conference in Japan every success.

One of the main subjects I discussed with them was the position of

Britain in Europe. We agreed that an important message from the conference

should be the British Government's commitment to being at the heart of

Europe. The United Kingdom will remain the ideal base for Japanese industry

to tackle the wider European market. We are delighted at the extent of

Japanese investment in this country. We shall continue to welcome Japanese

companies and to do what we can to ensure the success of their operations here. We are particularly glad that several of them have established research, and

development facilities in the UK.
