I write to thank you for your Despatch of 15 February in your capacity as HM Consul-General, Macao. This may well be a first!

You painted on a wide and fascinating canvas, and drew out some intriguing parallels between the various parts of the world in which you have served. Your comments on the importance for Britain of the China market are well taken at this end not just in Whitehall, but by British business generally, to judge from the extraordinary turn-out at the seminar in the City on 11 March, which you chaired.
