9) Policy was driven by politics alone. Whitehall ran the show. The process of transferring sovereignty gradually was a disaster.

10) Because of illusions of a world role we tried to please the world and ended up alienating everyone.

11) The British on the spot, by and large, knew nothing of the people among whom they lived.

four pieces the most ancient Arab nation.

8) We have over £50 bn of British assets to preserve and an entry into the largest and most rapidly growing market in the world

9) A new balance is being struck. The Governor has insisted on firm executive continuity until he goes. This reassures all parties.

10) Our interests are shared by the free world. There should be nothing chauvinistic about our policy. Continued growth will inevitably suck in an even higher quality of British goods and services; the main constraints will be in productive capacity and finance.

11) There are curiously familiar echoes in the Hong Kong Club, but the businessmen know China well and the peoples mix everywhere.

12) The Governor insists that Government should be transparent, fair and acceptable.
