PIRACY

1.

SEC (NS) MR HOWARD DNO, CAPT SHEPHARD

Following the visit of an International Maritime Organisation (IMO) working group to South East Asia in March this year, the group's report (copies already sent to Jakarta, Kuala Lumpur and Singapore by bag) was discussed during the meeting of the Maritime Safety Committee (MSC) of IMO 24-28 May.

2 =

The Committee welcomed the report but there was little substantive discussion of it. It was agreed that the report's recommendations be deferred until it had been fully disseminated among Member States. Thereafter an international circular on piracy would be drafted (for your information this may well follow closely the UK's M notice on piracy).

3. The MSC did not discuss technical assistance.
