Risk of collision is appreciable due to:

Heavy traffic using the through routes;

Frequent crossing traffic; and

Local fishing craft with nets (these may be encountered anywhere in Singapore Strait).

Navigational aids are often unreliable. The above factors make navigation through the Straits difficult, particularly for deep-draught vessels. Since passage through the Straits from One Fathom Bank to Horsburgh Light entails a run of 250 miles, long periods of considerable particular vigilance are necessary in order to maintain safe standards of navigation.
