A patent includes one or more numbered paragraphs, called claims. The claims in a patent define the extent of protection of the patent.
The Strasbourg Agreement Concerning the International Patent Classification, concluded in 1971, established a classification system for patents. It divides technology into 8 broad sections. There are about 64,000 subdivisions. Such a classification system assists filing and search for the prior art.
This is the name given to the person who is responsible for the administration of the patents system in the UK. The full title is Comptroller-General of Patents, Designs and Trade Marks.
Licences to exploit an invention may be ordered to a third party if the patent is not being sufficiently exploited by the owner. These are also known as non-voluntary licences.
Under the UK law which applies in Hong Kong, a design is defined as "features of shape, configuration, pattern or ornament applied to an article by any industrial process, being features which in the finished article appeal to and are judged by the eye, but does not include -
