route of the tunnel; and other ancilliary works.
Preliminary
design of the Principal Collection and Treatment system has been
completed. Detailed design started this month and construction is
planned to start in mid-1994 for completion in early 1997.

The six sewage collection networks which will be connected to
it are Tsuen Wan/Kwai Tsing, North West Kowloon, North and South
Kowloon, East Kowloon, Tseung Kwan O, and Chai Wan/Shau Kei Wan.
So far, with the exception of Tseung Kwan 0, consultancy studies
on each of these networks have been completed. The studies
have in each case identified a number of deficiencies such as
lack of capacity, misconnexions and malfunctioning of treatment
facilities. Detailed planning work is now under way.
Construction has already started on sewage upgrading works in two
of the six areas, and will start in the other four once detailed
planning work has been completed.

The Sewage Strategy Study also identified a number of areas
in which action will be needed, but on a less urgent timescale
than the HPP. These will extend beyond 1997 and the Chinese side
will be consulted on them.
7. These include a number of further regional sewage collection
networks being covered by consultancy studies which are not
connected to the principal collection and treatment system and do
not form part of the HPP. Progress of these studies and the six
connected to the principal collection and treatment system is
summarised in Annex A.
