We are also far from satisfied with the proposal to open certain classified documents, which are older than 30 years, to public access. While we welcome the initiative in principle, we are worried about the length of time involved in vetting documents for release, and the procedures which government departments will use to determine whether classified documents should be released.
In this respect, we note that the security regulations, which set out the criteria for the government's classification system, are themselves classified, and therefore not available to the public. The government should immediately declassify the regulations, and review its classification procedures,
to ensure that as much information as possible can be made available to the public.
