I attended the talk given by Han-to-the-Fi

Correspondents' Club today. Han made a good impression on

the audience but he said little new.

2.

He opened by saying that he was interested in free trade unionism rather than in politics. He was not calling for the overthrow of the Communist Party, there should be no contradiction between his own programme and the party. But he added that if the party were to oppose the workers and human rights, then he and his supporters would oppose the party.

3.

Han maintained that legitimate, free trade unions

were necessary as an outlet to avert social unrest; it was

because of his worries about the "time-bomb" of social

unrest that he was committed to his cause; he certainly did

not wish to see unrest.

Asked what statement of regret or repentance he would be prepared to make in order to satisfy conditions

set by the chinese authorities for his return to China, Han declined to clarify his position in advance of a clearer indication of the Chinese official position. Asked for his views on foreign investment in China, he said that while in the USA he had only been in touch with one company investing in China, AT&T, he hoped that such companies would encourage free trade unión activity among their Chinese workers.
