As mentioned earlier, APSC is part of Orion Network Systems, Inc., parent company to Orion Satellite Corporation, which is currently procuring communication satellites from British Aerospace in Stevenage for use in the Atlantic region. BAe has been involved with APSC from its inception and will, no doubt, be pleased to brief you about its potential industrial part in the project.
Apart from the UK's potential direct commercial interests, I hope the APSC proposal will receive your support because of the competition it will offer and consequential widening of user choice in the Pacific area. Users will include the national PTTs and commercial carriers of the area as well as businesses and carriers desiring telecom networks in Hong Kong and in countries belonging to the British Commonwealth of Nations. The technical design of APSC's proposed satellites are optimized for the particular situation in the Pacific, which is universal low-density inter-island communications in the center of the coverage and high-density spot communications between the business centers bordering the ocean. Intelsat's satellite designs are a compromise between conflicting requirements in their three ocean regions and we believe APSC's design is a marked improvement over what is available from them in the Pacific area.
I trust you will be able to support the application on the basis of the information given, but please let me, or David Gregory, know if any further background information or clarification is required.
Cordially,
C.
