A meeting will be held tomorrow 12 February of all Departments with an interest in the compensation claims arising from the shooting down of KAL-007. It is likely that the UK will decide to follow the USA in reviving these compensation claims.

2. Hong Kong Department was only informed today of this development. I understand that Catherine James of Consular Department faxed you a letter on 8 February on the subject: wonder if it would be possible for you to provide us with an idea of your thinking and interests deskby 1000Z?

I presume that the relatives in Hong Kong will be keen to follow up their initial compensation claims, and if true we would like to reflect this at the meeting.

3. Looking further ahead, there will be a meeting of all interested parties in Moscow at the end of this month (24-25 February), at which the Embassy will represent UK and Hong Kong interests. We will keep you informed of developments on this and other matters.
