9. The timing of this lunch was fortuitously fortunate, coming immediately after the receipt of Qian Qichen's reply. We were able to pitch our tone in a deliberately positive fashion, to encourage the Chinese to believe that we wanted the relationship

to prosper.

The discussion on Tibet was as sterile as usual, and

the points about Taiwan revealed that, even on small matters, the Embassy feel obliged to put their views on record. But all in all a friendly and relaxed occasion. A bit unreal, given all the fire and brimstone still bubbling away on Hong Kong.
