Construction Industry Training Centres operated by the Construction Industry Training Authority provide one-year basic craft training in key building trades and one-year basic technician training to Secondary Three and Secondary Five

Five leavers seeking craft and technician apprenticeships in the industry. They also provide a number of short training/retraining courses for adult workers. The two Clothing Industry Training Centres operated by the Clothing Industry Training Authority provide full-time and part-time courses for the training of workers in the clothing industry. All these centres are financed by a levy on the respective industries.

The Apprenticeship Ordinance, which is

administered by the Apprenticeship Division of the Technical Education and Industrial Training Department, stipulates that an employer may employ young persons aged between 14 and 18 in designated trades (42 trades have been designated so far) only if they are employed as apprentices under contracts of apprenticeship registered with the. Technical Education and Industrial Training Department. Employers of apprentices in non-designated trades or of apprentices in designated trades whose age is 19 years or above may have contracts registered with the Director of Technical Education and Industrial Training Department on a voluntary basis if both parties to the contract wish to avail themselves of

The polytechnics and technical institutes offer a wide range of evening courses practical subjects in addition to day courses. These evening courses are open to young people as well as adults.

The Vocational Training Council has set up 20 training boards and seven general committees to assist it in carrying out some of its stipulated functions. Vineteen training centres have been established to provide pre-employment and updating/upgrading training. These include full-time courses of duration varying from several weeks to one year and part-time courses organised for up-grading purposes. In addition, an engineering graduate training scheme

To provide more and better training opportunities for school leavers as well as for in-service personnel, the various training boards promote and organise apprenticeship and traineeship schemes and subsidised courses for their respective sectors.
