INFO PRIORITY UKREP JLG HONG KONG

FOR AMBASSADOR FROM HUM, AUSS

HONG KONG FOR DINHAM, GOVERNMENT HOUSE

POSSIBLE VISIT BY THE SECRETARY OF STATE: 9 JULY

1.

When we spoke on the secure telephone earlier TODAY undertook to let you have further information on planning for THE possible visit to Peking by the Secretary of State on 9 July.

2.

As I thought, the Private Office already have provisional bookings (under pseudonyms) for a visit in and out within the day, using JAL and Thai Airlines. These would allow time for a single, fairly substantial, session of talks, which is all We need on what we are billing as a transit stop. In addition the Secretary of State has said he would like to spend half an HOUR in the Forbidden City.

3.

1000

On that basis the timings might look as follows: depart Tokyo by JAL

Lunch on aircraft

arrive Peking

1315

1415 or

1430

talks at the Diaoyutai

1630 or 1645

talks end

1700 to 1730

1810

4.

Forbidden City

Leave Peking by Thai airlines for Bangkok.

This would mean that the Secretary of State travelled directly from the airport to the talks (you would brief him en route) and back directly from the Forbidden City to the airport. Presumably the Chinese Would provide outriders etc to speed HIS

way.
