Dear

1. You will recall that we reported Peng's return to Taiwan last year and Ken Walker, in his letter PAO(C) 7/4841/62 of 12 November 1992 to you, raised a question mark over why the mainland Chinese had been so worked up about his return to the homeland.

2. A year has passed and, apart from the flurry of excitement on his arrival here, very little has been heard of Dr Peng. He has definitely kept out of the public eye and though obviously sympathetic to the DPP, seems to have steered well clear of them. Perhaps this was part of the deal in getting his "pardon" from President Lee. I have not yet myself met him and have not gone

out of my way to do so. However, I hope to bump into him at some time and will report anything of interest when that arises.
