Taiwan's Chief Representative in the PBEC, Jeffrey Koo,

said that at a recent PBEC meeting in Hawaii Japan and Malaysia

had spoken in favour of Taiwan on the issue of its name in the

PBEC, but representatives from Australia, the USA and Canada had been "most unfriendly towards Taiwan" on the issue (CT 28 Oct).

The Government is set up a task force to promote Taiwan's bid for the 2002 Asian Games (Radio Taipei 26 Oct).

The Securities and Exchange Commission decided that

restrictions on foreign investment in Taiwan's Securities

Exchange should be abolished within one year (Commercial Times

8 Oct).

Following the announcement of a finding by the Commercial Arbitration Association that the Department of Rapid Transit Systems should pay NT$1bn to Matra of France as compensation for delays caused by the department to the construction of a Taipei Rapid Transport line, the department announced that it would file a countersuit seeking compensation

of NT$2bn from Matra for delays in delivering rolling stock (CT 8 Oct).

To meet GATT requirements, the Ministry of Finance has

reportedly decided that a limited number of European and Japanese insurance firms (in addition to American firms) may set up offices in Taiwan. Restrictions on Japanese imports are to be lifted in order to remove an obstacle for Taiwan's bid to

join the GATT (EDN 11 Oct, Commercial Times 27 Oct).

46.

A Foreign Ministry official said that Taiwan hopes to become an ASEAN dialogue partner next year (EDN 13 Oct).
