A group from Shenzhen led by municipal People's Congress Standing Committee Vice-Chairman Jiang Gui visited Hong Kong to inspect 8 Shenzhen enterprises here. The number of loss-making Shenzhen enterprises in Hong Kong was said to have
been reduced from 22 in 1991 to 4 at present (SSZD 20 Nov).

A fire at a toy factory, owned by a Hong Kong company, at Kuiyong in the Longgang district of Shenzhen on 19 November resulted in 81 deaths anbd 42 persons injured. Workers were said to have been unable to escape because of locked doors and
windows. Precautions recommended by the fire department in March this year had not been implemented, according to SSZD. Provincial Party Political and Legal Affairs Secretary Chen Shaoji and Public Security and fire department officials visited the scene on the evening after the fire, according to SD. The two papers carried brief reports of the event on the bottom half of their front pages on 20 November, followed by slightly longer reports in the following day's editions.

The results of an investigation into the explosion at the Qingshuihe Warehouses on 5 August were reported in late September and more information was released in November. Direct economic losses resulting from the explosions were estimated at Y250m. 15 persons had been killed and 141 wounded including 34
seriously (SSZD 22 Sept, PDOE 22 Sept, TKP 15 Nov).

An enlarged meeting of the Standing Committee of the Municipal Party Committee on the anti-corruption struggle was addressed by Li Youwei and Wang Zhongfu (SSZD 23-25 Sept).

Typhoon Dot on 26 September caused serious flooding. 155,000 people reportedly suffered losses and 54.6km of roads
were damaged. Direct economic losses were estimated at over
Y300m (SSZD 27-28 Sept). According to a later report (SSZD 21
Nov), it had been necessary to discharge 8,660,000 cu m of water
from the Shenzhen reservoir as a result of the heavy rainfall
