During a visit to Hong Kong, Director of the Provincial Science and Technology Commission Liang Xiang delivered a speech calling for more co-operation between Guangdong and Hong Kong in the development of science-based industry between (SSZD 2 Nov).

Contracts were signed by 3 companies in the Cheung Kong group for investment projects in Shantou, including a container port to be built by 1996 at a cost of nearly US$100m, a cement works costing Y140m and a thermal power plant (SD 2 Nov).
