B20.

Six work groups have been despatched to supervise the collection of taxes in various municipalities throughout Guangdong. They are tasked to help local governments with the inspection of taxes and to make sure that illicitly held monies

are collected (SD 10 Oct).

B21.

An article in SD of 10 October reviewed natural

disasters in Guangdong since records began in 1067 AD. It said

that Guangdong's most severe earthquake was one of 7.3 intensity

at Nan'ao on 13 February 1918. Since 1949 Guangdong's two

strongest earthquakes had been at Heyuan on 19 March 1962 (6.1

intensity) and at Yangjiang on 26 July 1969 (6.4 intensity),

with death tolls of 69 and 33 respectively. From 1970 to 1992 there had been 130 earthquakes exceeding intensity 3, the

strongest of which was one of intensity 5 at Yangjiang on 28 January 1986.

B22.

GDP growth in the mountainous areas of Guangdong last year was 21.9%, 0.1% less than for the province as a whole. The average income of peasants in the mountainous areas was Y1072,

according to Xie Fei, addressing a conference on work in hilly

areas of Guangdong on 9 October (SD 11 Oct).

27 people have been sentenced to death and 9 given

suspended death sentences, 23 given life imprisonment and 616 imprisoned for various terms in anti-corruption cases in

Guangzhou in the 31⁄2 years up to June 1993 (SD 12 Oct).

B24.

According to statistics of the provincial procuratorate, from the beginning of last year until the middle

of this year there were 213 cases of malfeasance, involving at

least 48 officials responsible for economic management duties, resulting in economic losses of Y23m (SD 21 Oct).

B25.

68 economic criminals were reported to have confessed since the beginning of August (SD 8 Nov).
