HOLY SEE PROPOSED SHORT-TERM OBJECTIVES APRIL 1993 MARCH 1994

1.

OBJECTIVE

To keep the Holy See informed of the policies which HMG is pursuing, with its partners and allies, to put an end to conflict and instability in the Balkans and elsewhere in Eastern and Central Europe, and to associate the Holy See with these policies wherever possible.

2. To keep Departments informed of the Holy See's policies towards States emerging from the former Soviet Union, both at the diplomatic and ecumenical level.

3. To ensure that the Holy See understands our policy in Northern Ireland, including economic development, education, community relations, housing.

4. To keep abreast of the Holy See's policy in the Middle East and their contacts with Islam, observing both the evolution of their relationship with Israel and their moves to balance this with the Arab powers.

5. To co-operate with the Holy See in pursuit of our interests in the new CSCE machinery.
