Lu Ping told a Meeting Point delegation that the election committee should comprise four sectors and not be entirely composed of District Board members, but it should be elected and not appointed, according to South China

Qian Qichen told members of the Liberal Democratic
Foundation that although there remained a great deal of
work to do connected with convergence, he believed that the Chinese Government would be able to make satisfactory
arrangements before 1997 for the work involved.

In an interview with Window (2 July 1993) Lu Ping
rejected the idea (attributed to Mr Goodlad) that any agreement between the two sides could be rejected by LegCo. Lu said that, if Mr Goodlad really said that, then
all the talks would have been a total waste.

Qian Qichen said that no matter what happened in
the next four years, China would resume sovereignty over
Hong Kong on schedule. Commenting on remarks by the Foreign Secretary that Hong Kong had become a political
city, Qian said that the "biggest politics" was to maintain
Hong Kong's economic, trade and financial status in order
to safeguard its prosperity (Hong Kong press 10 July 1993).

Jiang Enzhu said that the British side had raised
four demands in the talks:- participation in the work of the Preparatory Committee; a fully directly elected legislature in 2007; that the election committee to elect legislators
should become the Selection Committee to choose the first
Chief Executive of the SAR and to set objective criteria
for the through train (HK press 19 July 1993).
