Lord Shawcross has been exchanging correspondence with Baroness Chalker following the Lord's debate. He also sent the Minister a copy of his letter of 18 December to Baroness Chalker together with a letter to The Times (not published) following up the Minister's own letter.

2. I have submitted to Baroness Chalker a draft reply which aims to round off the correspondence with Lord Shawcross. I attach a copy. In the circumstances, I suggest that the Minister need only reply very briefly to Lord Shawcross.
