CHINA

As you know, the postponed call on the Prime Minister by Mr. Needham and Lord Prior to talk about their recent visit to China will now take place at 1515 on Wednesday, 5 May for 30 minutes.

I should be grateful for a brief for the meeting to reach this Office on Tuesday, 4 May. In particular, it would be useful for the Prime Minister to have a brief note about the visit (and any other recent visits to China by Lord Prior), a note on contracts in which Lord Prior is interested in both China and Hong Kong and any particular points on Anglo-Chinese trade which you will want the Prime Minister to get across.

I should be grateful if you could also provide briefing for use as necessary on ECGD cover, which is bound to come up, and possibly more broadly than for China alone.

I am copying this letter to Stephen Smith (Foreign and Commonwealth Office) and to John Warren (Mr. Needham's Office).

Jove,

Stephe
