In the course of a routine discussion at the National Defence University Last week, my US colleague was informed that a special think tank has been created to deal with the military aspects of an early Chinese take-over of Hong Kong. It is staffed by members of both NDU and CIISS.

When my colleague expressed his surprise at what he described as crude sabre rattling, the Chinese adopted a very hard line posture claiming that British intransigence left them no other option.

COMMENT

My PLA contacts have always refused to discuss Hong Kong on the grounds that it is a political matter. I have requested a farewell visit to CISS and NDU and will raise the subject.
