1. You will recall that Christopher Fildes of the 'Daily Telegraph' wrote to the Minister recently about his Garrick lunch for Ambassador Ma on 25 March (attached).

2.

Fildes rang Mr Goodlad on 29 March to say that this had been a successful social occasion with "bags of goodwill" on all sides. No-one had given anything away. Ma had taken the line that Chinese-British talks on Hong Kong had nearly been put on the rails on 10 March, But the British deadline had been "intolerable".
