They would prefer to find more compatible and congenial broadcasting partners than News Corporation, and they are satisfied that they can make alternative arrangements for their service in Asia. WSTV see a future in which they, CNN and Sky News are all on air competing for audiences over a large part of the world.
4. The issue of the writ is likely to attract a fair amount of publicity. WSTV are preparing a press release and will fax us a copy. If the FCO is asked to comment I suggest we should say no more at this stage than that this is a legal dispute between two independent companies, and point out that WSTV, unlike World Service Radio, operates commercially and is not government-funded. If asked we can say that we maintain regular contact with WSTV but that they did not seek official advice over their difficulties with Star.
5. Since drafting the above, I have seen the minute from PS/PUS (copied only to Mr Alston) saying that Mr Phillis telephoned the PUS yesterday to give him the news.
