BBC WORLD SERVICE! JAMMING OF MANDARIN SERVICE

1.

When Sir John Ramsden and I saw Bob Phillis and David Witherow (respectively Managing Director and Deputy Managing Director of the World Service) on 30 November, Mr Phillis mentioned that their Mandarin service was experiencing serious jamming, although neither the Cantonese nor the English services appeared to be affected.

2.

They confirmed that the Chinese were jamming transmissions from Hong Kong, Singapore and from the Russian

transmitters in Chita and Irkutsk on which the World Service had hired air time.
