REQUEST BY JONATHAN DIMBLEBY TO FILM A LIVE HONG KONG/CHINA MEETING IN THE FCO
1.
On 7 December Francis Gerrard, Jonathan Dimbleby's colleague, telephoned me from Hong Kong where the team are filming. He asked whether Mr Dimbleby might film the "important meeting" he felt sure would take place between officials at the FCO during the course of next week. I simply undertook to make inquiries.
2. I had earlier told Gerrard, at APS/Mr Goodlad's request, that Mr Goodlad had no objection to the filming of (genuine) official meetings on Hong Kong in the FCO provided that, as before, we had the
opportunity to vet footage before transmission. The problem remained to identify a suitable occasion.
3. I should be grateful to know how I should reply to this latest request. Mr Dimbleby appears intent on filming a "live" meeting even though we have tried to explain on several occasions that business in the Office, especially on fast moving issues, is rarely conducted through formal set-piece meetings.
