HONG KONG: DEFENSIVE LINES TO TAKE: WEEKEND 10-13 DECEMBER
1. Further to our conversation, I confirm that if the News
Dept duty officer is asked for comment on Chinese statements
on Hong Kong matters over the weekend we recommend that he should adopt the following general approach:
-
The Secretary of State gave a number of interviews to the
press following his statement to the House of Commons on
Monday 6 December;
The Senior British Representative to the JLG (Hugh Davies)
gave a press conference following JLG XXVIII on 9 December;
-
The Governor responded on 10 December to press questions
about a Chinese suggestion that we should publish details of
the Sino-British talks on constitutional matters;
We have nothing to add to any of those statements.
2. You already have lines to take in case the duty officer is
questioned about the FAC evidence session on 8 December (Sir P
Cradock, Sir A Donald and Sir R Evans).
