MR CHRIS PATTEN

-

DOORSTEP

LONDON 29 JULY 1993

MR PATTEN:

That is not a matter for me, I can tell you about the position in Saikung (phon) and I can tell you about the Regional Council and I can see that you are all really interested in that by-election.

QUESTION: [It was: "Do you expect to rejom the Calomet, in the light of....

the conflict of the Tory government?

MR PATTEN:

I find that being Governor of Hong Kong is very much a full time job and even at the margins of my day I do not have the time to take on other people's responsibilities. What I do observe as an interested passer-through is that all the economic indicators in the United Kingdom seem to be set in the right direction and that that is not the case in much of the rest of Europe, indeed I read reports earlier in the week saying that the main threat to our economic recovery in the United Kingdom at the moment is the weakness of European economies. So as an ex-politician that seems to me to have certain medium and longer term political

implications but I had better not say any more than that.
