Many thanks for your letter of 29 July. It was good to learn that you are back on the Hong Kong circuit, and I admired the first fruits of your Consultancy contract.

As you say, the past year on Hong Kong has been a busy one, with more than our usual ration of thrills and spills. But I am hopeful that our present talks with the Chinese will lead to an understanding which will take Sino/British relations back into a calmer phase.

I have been in New York only once since we left, and that was a whistle-stop tour with the Foreign Secretary. There will probably be another visit, equally short, at the end of September. I will contact you if I possibly can, but I am sure you will understand the difficulties. If on the other hand you are in London please look me up.
