MR PATTEN:

There is another ladder.

INTERVIEWER:

Talking about what you will do next, I suppose this week, we were

just hearing in the Sunday paper slot, I suppose the classic clinical definition of schizophrenia would be Chris Patten remembering general election night 1992?

MR PATTEN:

It seems a long time ago and it has been a pretty eventful year. That was not the happiest night for me personally but it was a very happy night for me professionally because we won an election in a recession and as President Bush subsequently discovered, it is not a very easy thing to do. I think we have seen all over Europe in the year since how much deeper and tougher the recession was than anybody had anticipated, so I am delighted we won.

INTERVIEWER:

We saw that film there and the whole situation in Hong Kong, with these reforms and so on, what about the people who just say it is a bit late, is it not, we should have done that before 1984 or after 1984, why didn't we do it earlier, a bit late, death bed

repentance?
